Fixing Your Plumbing To Fix Your Life

3 At-Home Methods For Cleaning A Clogged Drain

If you own a home, there's a good chance you may develop a clog in a drain pipe at some point or another. When this happens, you may need to contact a plumbing company to schedule services for cleaning the drain; however, you could try one or more of the following at-home methods first. These methods can help you clear a clogged drain and take care of the problem yourself could help you save some money. Here are three methods you could try to clear a clogged drain in your home.

A Hanger or Drain-Cleaning Stick

If you go to a hardware store, you can purchase a cheap, plastic drain-cleaning stick you could use for cleaning a clogged drain. If you do not have one, you could try using a hanger. Both of these work in the same way and can help you clear a clogged drain.

To use either of these options, simply insert the item into the drain and push down as far as you can go. Next, you should pull the device up to see if anything comes up. If you can feel the clog in the pipe, work the device up and down to try to loosen it. Afterward, run water to clear the debris down the line.

This option works well if the clog is within reach, but it may not work well if the clog is too far down your pipe already.

Shop Vac

A second at-home method you could try involves using a shop vac to pull up the clog, and this method works great if your shop vac is powerful and if you can create a tight seal. To use this method, make sure you set the vacuum to liquid suctioning. Next, place the hose end over the drain and turn the device on.

If your vacuum is powerful enough, it may pull the clogged debris up and out of the line. If so, your clogged drain problem will be fixed.

Hot Water

The other at-home method you could try involves pouring boiling hot water into the drain. Hot water is often strong enough to clear through debris in lines, and this method can work especially well if you combine it with the use of a hanger or drain-cleaning stick.

If you try one or more of these methods and still cannot get the drain to work properly, you will need to contact a plumbing company to schedule drain cleaning services.
